Project Brief:
The third project of Fall Interior Design Studio entails the design of a residential loft space for a selected site in Cincinnati. This project will investigate the design of housing generally and several supportive topics including residential construction systems, human behavioral response in residential environments, basic code requirements, anthropometric standards, ADA and universal design, color design, etc. As a comprehensive project, it will address the various aspects of design as well as drawing conventions and presentation strategies.

Client:
My clients are Mark and Rob, a newly-wed couple in the process of adopting a baby girl, Emma. Mark is a professor of law at NKU. Rob is a freelance photographer. Emma is 1 year old. Like many babies her age, Emma loves playing with her toys and being curious. A babysitter will be looking after her on Tuesdays and Thursdays and she will go to preschool the rest of the week. The family loves spending time outdoors with their bicycles and participating in sports events. Rob travels a lot due to his job-- especially internationally. Mark is a collector of furniture and he asked the designer to incorporate his favorite pieces: a Noguchi coffee table and a Modulicious low dresser by Blu Dot. Both are avid readers and have a large book collection.

Concept:
When thinking about my clients, the first concept that came to mind was the idea of connections. Mark and Rob are forming a new family and building lots of new connections. However, when the design process began, I found it difficult to work “connection” into my design. I decided to go back to an early study model and figure out what about it intrigued me. After taking this second look I settled on the folded planes of the thing, the way that each part was connected through folds and separated by cuts. That led me to change my conceptual idea to folded planes, implementing this through the floating panels, the wallpaper and tile choices, and the furniture.
