Project Brief:
The focus of this analytical exercise is the investigation of the experiential understanding and representation of a series of interior/exterior spaces in our campus. The first phase’s aim is to represent space using the photo-collage technique. The second and final phase’s aim is to go beyond the pure photographic representation linked to the act of visual perception. My space was the Atrium located in Alumni Hall, Miami University.

Collage:
The Atrium in Alumni Hall emphasizes the circulation of space. The whole room is connected by the mirrored staircases on either side of the room. They are depicted from several angles in the collage to emphasize their importance in the space. They allow traffic to flow from the main floor to the catwalk space and back down. Because there are staircases on both sides, the whole room gets a circular feel as you travel up in and down the other. The placement of the photos tries to replicate this with their more rounded composition. The room’s height and windows give the viewer a sense of being indoors while still getting the natural light and air of the outside. These windows are prominently on display at the top of the montage. This collage made me really think about the impact circulation has on a space, not just for traffic flow but it can define a space as it does in the Atrium.

Montage:
The layout of the montage emphasizes the double height space. The photos are laid out in a way that represents a section cut of the space. The materiality of the space— the tiled floor, the metal handrails, the lights, and the artwork— all are emphasized in the montage by using the image of them in ways that are not how they appear in the space. The artwork is especially emphasized by the three-dimensional objects placed around the montage. The montage showed me how to articulate the most important parts of a space and emphasize them in innovative and creative ways. To improve, I would try to find and include images that show the contrast of the space when projects are displayed to show the space in use.
